The Well Baby Scan is a comprehensive assessment of your baby's health and development during the later stages of pregnancy. Here's what you need to know.
What Does the Well Baby Scan Examine?
This scan, performed between 20-40 weeks of pregnancy, provides a thorough assessment including:
Fetal Measurements
- Head circumference - brain development
- Abdominal circumference - overall growth
- Thigh bone (femur) length - limb development
- Heart rate - cardiac health
Estimated Fetal Weight
Using the measurements taken, we calculate an estimated fetal weight to ensure your baby is growing appropriately for their gestational age.
Fetal Wellbeing Assessment
The scan evaluates:
- Fetal movements - activity levels
- Placental positioning - where it's located
- Amniotic fluid levels - ensuring adequate fluid surrounds baby
- Blood flow to the placenta - nutrient delivery to baby
Baby's Position
We determine whether your baby is:
- Head-down (cephalic) - ideal for vaginal delivery
- Breech - bottom or feet first
- Transverse - lying sideways
- Angled (oblique) - at an angle
Who Needs a Well Baby Scan?
Not all women need to have an ultrasound in the latter part of their pregnancy. However, these scans can offer a lot of reassurance and are particularly valuable if:
- You have concerns about baby's movements
- You're measuring large or small for dates
- You have a medical condition requiring monitoring
- Your healthcare provider recommends additional checks
- You simply want reassurance about baby's wellbeing
The Reassurance Factor
Many parents find significant peace of mind in seeing their baby, checking growth, and confirming everything is progressing well as they approach their due date.
