The 20-week detailed anatomy scan, also known as the anomaly scan, is one of the most comprehensive ultrasound examinations during pregnancy.
What is the Anomaly Scan?
This thorough ultrasound is performed around 20 weeks of pregnancy and typically lasts 30-45 minutes. It provides a detailed assessment of your baby's development.
Why Do We Do This Scan?
As clinical sonographer Monica Healy explains: "We do an anomaly scan because we want to know if the baby has any anomalies that need attention the minute the baby is born."
Early detection allows:
- Parents to prepare emotionally and practically
- Healthcare teams to plan for special care needs
- Appropriate delivery arrangements to be made
