Many patients ask about health insurance coverage for ultrasound scans. Here's what you need to know.
Important Note
Ultrasound Ireland cannot control or guarantee insurance claim outcomes. Coverage depends entirely on your individual policy and insurer's decisions.
May I Be Covered?
Partial or full coverage of the costs of your ultrasound scans may be covered by your health insurance plan. However, this varies significantly between:
- Different insurers
- Different policy levels
- Whether you have a GP referral
- The type of scan required
How Payment Works
No clinic offers direct settlement for outpatient ultrasounds. This means:
- You pay at the time of your appointment
- We provide a detailed receipt
- You submit a claim to your insurer for reimbursement
Your Receipt Includes
We provide receipts containing:
- Diagnostic scan type
- Cost of the procedure
- Radiologist name
- Sonographer credentials
How to Submit Your Claim
When submitting to your insurance:
- Use the receipt we provide
- Select "Other/Screening" as the treatment type
- Note: No standard procedure codes exist for outpatient ultrasounds
Tax Relief
You may also claim a portion of your medical expenses on the Med1 tax form through Revenue. Visit revenue.ie for more information.
Before Your Appointment
We recommend:
- Contact your insurer to check your coverage
- Review your policy benefit tables
- Ask about claim procedures specific to your plan
