Wondering when to book your first pregnancy scan? Timing is important to ensure we can see everything we need to.
The Optimal Timing
According to Siobhan, our Patient Support Specialist, "A really good time to come for an early pregnancy ultrasound is no sooner than 6 and a half weeks when we can see an embryo with a heartbeat."
What the Early Scan Assesses
Your early pregnancy scan serves several important purposes:
- Pregnancy dating - confirming how far along you are
- Single vs multiple embryos - checking for twins or more
- Heartbeat detection - the reassurance of seeing that flicker
- Ectopic pregnancy exclusion - ensuring the pregnancy is in the right location
Why Wait Until 6.5 Weeks?
Coming too early can lead to unnecessary worry. Before 6.5 weeks:
- The embryo may be too small to see clearly
- A heartbeat may not yet be detectable
- This could cause unnecessary anxiety and require a repeat scan
How to Calculate Your Timing
If you're unsure of your dates, count from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). This is how gestational age is typically calculated.
For example:
- LMP was 6 weeks ago = you're approximately 6 weeks pregnant
- Wait another few days before booking your scan
What If My Dates Are Uncertain?
If you're unsure about your dates:
- Share this information when booking
- Our team can advise on appropriate timing
- A scan can help establish accurate dating
