Nuchal Translucency Scan

11–14 weeks (ideally 12.5-13.5 weeks)|€150(Duration: 20-30 minutes)

A specialised scan to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome. Performed between 11-14 weeks with detailed fetal assessment.

About This Scan

Nuchal Translucency Scan

The nuchal translucency (NT) scan is a specialised ultrasound performed between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy (ideally 12.5–13.5 weeks) to help estimate the risk of your baby having Down syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities.

Important: The NT scan is an assessment screening test, not a diagnosis. It helps identify babies who may be at higher risk and might benefit from further testing. A normal result does not guarantee your baby doesn't have a chromosomal condition, and an increased measurement doesn't mean your baby definitely does.

What Is Nuchal Translucency?

Nuchal translucency refers to the small collection of fluid at the back of your baby's neck. All babies have some fluid here, but babies with chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome often have a slightly increased amount.

Understanding the Results

Without blood tests: An NT measurement of ≤ 3mm is generally considered within the normal range.

For more accurate screening: NT measurement is more effective when combined with blood tests measuring two hormones (β-hCG and PAPP-A). This is called "combined first trimester screening" and provides a more accurate risk assessment.

We do not offer blood tests at our centre. Please speak to your GP or hospital about arranging blood work if you want combined screening.

Important Information

What If the Measurement Is Increased? An increased NT measurement doesn't mean your baby definitely has a chromosomal abnormality. Many babies with slightly increased measurements are completely healthy. However, further testing may be recommended, such as combined screening (blood tests), NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing), or amniocentesis or CVS (diagnostic tests). Your GP or consultant will discuss options with you.

When Is the Best Time to Have This Scan?

Ideal timing: 12.5–13.5 weeks

The nuchal translucency can only be measured accurately within a specific window:

  • Earliest: 11 weeks + 2 days
  • Latest: 13 weeks + 6 days
  • Optimal: 12.5–13.5 weeks (baby is the ideal size for measurement)

What We Check

  • Measure the nuchal translucency (fluid at the back of baby's neck)
  • Check for presence or absence of the nasal bone
  • Look for any physical abnormalities
  • Take detailed measurements of your baby
  • Assess gestational age and provide due date estimate
  • Check for single or multiple pregnancy
  • Assess fetal heartbeat and movement

What's Included

  • Detailed ultrasound examination
  • Nuchal translucency measurement
  • Assessment of nasal bone
  • Fetal anatomy review (as visible at this gestation)
  • Medical obstetric ultrasound report
  • Glossy keepsake photo

Why You Might Need This Scan

  • Want screening for chromosomal abnormalities
  • Are over 35 (risk increases with maternal age)
  • Have a family history of chromosomal conditions
  • Want detailed measurements and information about your baby's development

What to Expect

Before Your Scan

Attend with a mildly filled bladder. Know your last menstrual period or established due date. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

Preparation checklist:

  • Mildly filled bladder
  • Bring your due date if already established
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Arrive 10 minutes early

During the Scan

You'll lie comfortably on an examination table. The sonographer applies warm gel to your abdomen and uses a high-resolution ultrasound probe to capture detailed images.

The sonographer will carefully measure the fluid at the back of your baby's neck. This requires baby to be in a specific position — sometimes we need to wait for baby to move, or gently encourage movement.

You'll see your baby on a large screen and the sonographer will explain what they're measuring and looking for.

The scan typically takes 20-30 minutes.

After Your Scan

You'll receive immediate verbal results explaining the NT measurement and what it means. You'll also receive a medical obstetric report and a keepsake photo. If the measurement is outside the normal range, your sonographer will discuss next steps, which may include speaking with your GP about blood tests or further screening options.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. This is an elective scan — you can book directly without a referral.
Assessment Screening (like the NT scan) estimates the probability of a condition. It cannot tell you for certain whether your baby is affected. Diagnostic tests (like amniocentesis) can give a definitive answer but carry a small risk of miscarriage.
NT screening alone detects approximately 70-80% of Down syndrome cases. Combined with blood tests, detection rates increase to approximately 90%.
The NT measurement can only be done between 11+2 and 13+6 weeks. If you're outside this window, speak to your GP about alternative screening options such as NIPT.
