Second Trimester Growth Scan

14–27 weeks|€150(Duration: 20-30 minutes)

Monitor your baby's development during the second trimester with growth measurements and assessment.

About This Scan

Second Trimester Growth Scan

A second trimester growth scan is performed between 14 and 27 weeks of pregnancy to check how your baby is developing. Using detailed measurements and real-time ultrasound imaging, we assess your baby's growth and track the pregnancy's progression.

This scan is ideal for parents who want additional monitoring of their baby's development between their early scan and third trimester.

How We Measure Growth

Your baby's measurements are compared with international obstetric growth charts to calculate:

  • Gestational age (if dates are uncertain)
  • Estimated fetal weight (how big your baby is)
  • Growth percentile (how your baby compares to others at the same gestation)
  • Growth trends (if you've had previous scans with us)

These measurements provide information about how your baby is growing at this stage of pregnancy.

Important Note

This scan does not replace your 20-week hospital anatomy scan. The anomaly (anatomy) scan performed by your hospital around 20-24 weeks is a detailed examination of your baby's organs and structures. Our growth scan complements but does not replace this important appointment.

What We Check

  • Confirm fetal heartbeat
  • Check for single or multiple pregnancy
  • Take growth measurements: Head circumference (HC), Abdominal circumference (AC), Femur length (FL)
  • Calculate estimated fetal weight
  • Assess amniotic fluid levels
  • Check placental position
  • Note baby's position

What to Expect

Before Your Scan

No special preparation is required at this stage of pregnancy.

Preparation checklist:

  • Know your due date
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing
  • Arrive a few minutes early to confirm details

During the Scan

You'll lie comfortably on an examination table. The sonographer applies warm gel to your abdomen and gently moves the ultrasound probe to visualise your baby.

You'll see your baby on a large screen — at this stage you'll see them moving, kicking, and perhaps sucking their thumb! The sonographer will point out features and explain what they're measuring.

You'll see measurement markers appear on screen as the sonographer measures head, abdomen, and thigh bone. These measurements are used to calculate your baby's estimated weight and growth percentile.

The scan typically takes 20-30 minutes.

After Your Scan

You'll receive immediate verbal results explaining your baby's growth measurements. You'll also receive a medical obstetric report with all measurements and a keepsake photo.
