Proper preparation helps ensure we get the best possible images during your ultrasound. Here's what you need to know for abdominal and pelvic scans.
Pelvic Ultrasound Preparation
For a pelvic ultrasound, you should drink 1 litre of water one hour prior to your appointment time.
Why a Full Bladder?
A full bladder:
- Pushes the bowel out of the way
- Creates an "acoustic window" for clearer images
- Helps visualise the uterus and ovaries more clearly
- Improves overall image quality
Tips for Success
- Start drinking water about 60-90 minutes before your appointment
- Avoid emptying your bladder once you start drinking
- If you arrive early, continue holding on
Abdominal Ultrasound Preparation
For an abdominal ultrasound, you must fast from food for at least 6 hours before your appointment.
Fasting Guidelines
- No food for 6 hours (4 hours for small children if possible)
- Small amounts of water are permitted
- Take essential medications as normal with water
Why Fasting?
Fasting helps because:
- The gallbladder remains full (eaten food empties it)
- Gas and food in the stomach don't obscure views
- Organs are easier to visualise
Appointment Duration
Please allow up to 30-45 minutes for your examination to be completed. This includes:
- Registration and preparation
- The scan itself
- Time for images to be reviewed
What to Bring
- Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
- Your referral letter (if applicable)
- Previous scan reports (if relevant)
- A list of any medications you're taking
