A carotid doppler ultrasound is done to determine whether you have changes to the lining of your arteries that could narrow them or indicate atherosclerotic disease.
Understanding the Carotid Arteries
Your neck contains three types of carotid arteries:
- Common carotid artery - the main artery in your neck
- Internal carotid artery - supplies blood to your brain
- External carotid artery - supplies blood to your face and neck
These arteries are vital for delivering oxygen-rich blood to your brain.
How the Test Works
The carotid ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate:
- Blood flow to the brain
- Arterial lining thickness
- Plaque buildup and characteristics
- Whether plaque is hard or soft
- Presence of any blood clots
The test takes approximately 30 minutes and is safe and pain-free.
Why You Might Need This Test
Stroke Risk Factors
You may be at higher risk if you have:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Family history of stroke
- Elevated cholesterol
- Smoking history
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Obesity
Other Indications
Carotid ultrasound is also used for:
- Monitoring after carotid surgery
- Detecting aneurysms
- Assessing unexplained neurological symptoms
- Pre-operative assessment
What the Test Can Detect
The scan can identify:
- Narrowing of the arteries (stenosis)
- Plaque accumulation
- Blood flow abnormalities
- Early signs of atherosclerosis
- Blockages that may require treatment
The Procedure
- You'll lie on an examination table
- Gel is applied to your neck
- The sonographer moves the transducer along your neck
- Images and measurements are recorded
- Results are sent to your referring doctor
