Varicose Vein Ultrasound Scan
What Is a Varicose Vein Ultrasound Scan?
A varicose vein ultrasound is a specialised Doppler scan that examines the veins in your legs, checking for varicose veins, venous reflux (backward blood flow), and incompetent valves. This scan is essential for understanding the underlying cause of varicose veins and planning treatment.
Unlike a standard DVT scan, this examination specifically assesses the superficial venous system (the veins closer to the skin surface) and checks whether the valves are functioning correctly to prevent blood flowing backward.
What We Assess With This Scan
- Saphenofemoral junction (where the great saphenous vein meets the femoral vein)
- Great saphenous vein (long saphenous)
- Small saphenous vein (short saphenous)
- Superficial varicosities
- Valve competence: Whether valves are closing properly
- Venous reflux: Duration and location of any backward blood flow
This scan cannot assess:
- Deep vein issues in as much detail (separate DVT scan may be needed)
- Treatment decisions (these are made by your vascular specialist)
Why You Might Need This Scan
Common symptoms:
- •Visible bulging veins on the legs
- •Aching or heavy legs
- •Swollen ankles (especially at end of day)
- •Leg cramps, especially at night
- •Itching or burning sensation around veins
- •Skin discolouration around the ankles
- •Restless legs
Conditions we assess:
- •Varicose veins
- •Venous insufficiency
- •Venous reflux
- •Incompetent valves
- •Superficial thrombophlebitis
What to Expect
Before Your Scan
No special preparation is needed.
Preparation checklist:
- Wear loose trousers or shorts (you will need to remove trousers for the exam)
- Avoid wearing compression stockings on the day if possible
- Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time
During the Scan
The scan begins with you lying on an examination table facing upward. The sonographer scans from the groin area down to the mid-calf on each leg. You'll hear a sound like wind or waves — this is the Doppler detecting venous blood flow. You'll then be asked to stand while the sonographer assesses the superficial veins and checks for reflux. Standing allows blood to pool naturally, making it easier to detect valve incompetence. Duration: Single leg 30-45 minutes, both legs 60-75 minutes.
After Your Scan
You can return to normal activities immediately. There are no restrictions.
Results & Next Steps
Your scan is reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who prepares a formal report. This report is sent to your referring doctor within 2-3 working days. The report will include location and extent of any reflux, which veins are affected, presence of any deep vein issues, and recommendations for treatment planning.
