What Is a Scrotal / Testes Ultrasound Scan?

A scrotal ultrasound is a non-invasive examination of the testicles, scrotum, and surrounding structures using sound waves. This quick, painless scan can help identify the cause of testicular pain, swelling, or lumps, providing valuable information to guide your care.

Finding a lump or experiencing testicular pain can be worrying. This scan offers a fast, accurate assessment to help you and your doctor understand what's going on.

What We Assess With This Scan

  • Testicles (both sides)
  • Epididymis (the coiled tube that stores and transports sperm)
  • Spermatic cord
  • Scrotal wall and surrounding tissues
  • Blood flow to the testicles (using Doppler)

This scan cannot assess:

  • Fertility assessment (semen analysis is required)
  • Hormone levels (blood tests are required)

What to Expect

Before Your Scan

No special preparation is needed.

Preparation checklist:

  • You will need to undress from the waist down for the examination
  • Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time

During the Scan

You'll lie on an examination table facing upward. You'll be asked to undress from the waist down and cover your penis with a towel, leaving the testicles exposed. The sonographer applies warm gel to the scrotum and gently moves a handheld probe across the area to capture images. Blood flow to the testicles is also assessed using Doppler ultrasound. The scan is straightforward and typically takes 20-30 minutes.

After Your Scan

You can return to normal activities immediately. There are no restrictions.

Results & Next Steps

Your scan is reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who prepares a formal report. This report is sent to your referring doctor within 2-3 working days. The vast majority of scrotal lumps are benign (non-cancerous). Common findings include epididymal cysts, hydroceles, and varicoceles — all of which are usually harmless.
