Menopause Pelvic Ultrasound
What Is a Menopause Pelvic Ultrasound?
A menopause pelvic ultrasound is a detailed examination specifically designed to assess the health of the reproductive organs in women who are approaching, experiencing, or have completed menopause.
Whether you're navigating perimenopause, have completed menopause, or are managing symptoms or treatments like hormone replacement therapy (HRT), this scan provides valuable diagnostic information in a safe, professional setting.
After menopause, the endometrium (womb lining) should be thin — typically less than 4-5mm if you're not on HRT. A thickened endometrium in a post-menopausal woman, especially with bleeding, may require further investigation.
What We Assess With This Scan
- Uterus (size, shape, and any structural changes)
- Endometrium (lining thickness and texture — particularly important after menopause)
- Ovaries (size, appearance, any cysts or masses)
- Adnexa (structures around the uterus, including fallopian tubes)
- Bladder (when indicated)
This scan cannot assess:
- Definitive cancer diagnosis (biopsy or hysteroscopy may be needed)
- Hormonal levels (blood tests are required)

What to Expect
Before Your Scan
Full bladder required for the first part of the scan: Drink 500ml-1 litre of water starting about 1 hour before your appointment. Finish drinking at least 20 minutes before your scan time.
Preparation checklist:
- Drink 500ml-1 litre of water 1 hour before appointment
- Wear comfortable, easily removable clothing
- Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time
During the Scan
The scan begins with a transabdominal ultrasound (probe on your lower abdomen) with a full bladder. For more detailed imaging, particularly of the endometrium and ovaries, a transvaginal ultrasound may be recommended. You'll remain comfortably covered with a sheet throughout, and you can stop the examination at any time if you feel uncomfortable. The scan typically takes 20-30 minutes.
After Your Scan
You can return to normal activities immediately. There are no restrictions or downtime.
