Lumps and Bumps Ultrasound
What Is a Lumps and Bumps Ultrasound?
A soft tissue (lumps and bumps) ultrasound is a non-invasive scan used to examine lumps, swellings, and other abnormalities in the soft tissues beneath the skin. Ultrasound can help determine whether a lump is fluid-filled (cystic) or solid, and can provide important information about its size, location, and characteristics.
Finding a new lump can be worrying. This quick, painless scan provides valuable diagnostic information to help you and your doctor understand what's going on and decide on next steps.
Please note: We do not perform breast ultrasound at this clinic.
What We Assess With This Scan
- The lump itself (size, shape, location, internal characteristics)
- Surrounding soft tissues (muscles, subcutaneous fat)
- Cysts (fluid-filled lumps)
- Lipomas (fatty lumps)
- Lymph nodes (enlarged nodes in neck, armpit, groin)
- Ganglion cysts, hernias, haematomas, and abscesses
This scan cannot assess:
- Provide a definitive diagnosis for all lumps (biopsy may be needed)
- Assess internal organs (separate scans are available)
- Perform breast ultrasound

What to Expect
Before Your Scan
No special preparation is needed.
Preparation checklist:
- Wear loose-fitting clothing or clothing that allows easy access to the area of concern
- Be prepared to show the sonographer exactly where the lump is located
- Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time
During the Scan
The sonographer will ask you to point out or feel the lump so they know exactly where to scan. A small amount of warm gel is applied directly over the lump. The sonographer gently moves a handheld probe across the skin to capture images. The scan is painless and typically takes 15-30 minutes.
After Your Scan
You can return to normal activities immediately. There are no restrictions or downtime.
Results & Next Steps
Your scan is reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who prepares a formal report. This report is sent to your referring doctor (or to you if self-referred) within 2-3 working days. The report will describe the lump's characteristics and may suggest what type of lump it is.
