Carotid Doppler Scan
What Is a Carotid Doppler Scan?
A carotid Doppler scan is a non-invasive ultrasound examination of the carotid arteries — the major blood vessels on either side of your neck that carry blood from your heart to your brain.
This scan uses Doppler technology to measure the speed and volume of blood flow through these arteries. It can detect plaque build-up (atherosclerosis), narrowing (stenosis), and other abnormalities that may increase your risk of stroke.
What We Assess With This Scan
- Common carotid artery (on both sides)
- Internal carotid artery (supplies blood to the brain)
- External carotid artery (supplies blood to the face and scalp)
- Plaque: Amount, location, and characteristics of any fatty deposits
- Stenosis: Degree of narrowing in the arteries
- Blood flow: Speed and volume of blood flow using Doppler technology
This scan cannot assess:
- Blood vessels inside the brain itself
- The exact cause of existing neurological symptoms
- Whether you will have a stroke (it assesses risk factors only)
Why You Might Need This Scan
Common symptoms:
- •Previous stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA/mini-stroke)
- •Dizziness or balance problems
- •Temporary vision changes
- •Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
- •High cholesterol or cardiovascular disease
- •Family history of stroke or carotid disease
Conditions we assess:
- •Atherosclerotic plaque (fatty build-up)
- •Carotid artery stenosis (narrowing)
- •Increased risk of stroke or TIA (mini-stroke)
What to Expect
Before Your Scan
No special preparation is needed. You can eat, drink, and take your medications as normal.
Preparation checklist:
- Wear a top with an open or easily accessible neckline
- Remove necklaces or jewellery from the neck area
- Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time
During the Scan
You'll lie comfortably on an examination table with your head slightly elevated. The sonographer applies warm gel to your neck on both the right and left sides. A handheld probe (transducer) is gently moved across your neck to capture images of the carotid arteries. You will hear the sound of blood flowing as the sonographer takes measurements — this "whooshing" sound is the Doppler signal detecting blood movement. The scan typically takes 20-30 minutes.
After Your Scan
You can return to normal activities immediately. There are no restrictions or downtime.
Results & Next Steps
Your scan is reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who prepares a formal report. This report is sent to your referring doctor within 2-3 working days. Your GP will discuss the results with you and advise on any follow-up or treatment needed.
