What Is a Aortic Aneurysm Ultrasound Screening?

The aorta is your body's largest artery, running from your heart down through your abdomen to supply blood to the rest of your body. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) occurs when a section of this artery wall becomes weak and begins to bulge outward.

If an aneurysm grows large enough, it can rupture — a medical emergency that is often fatal. The good news is that AAA can be detected early with a simple ultrasound scan, allowing for monitoring or treatment before it becomes dangerous.

What We Assess With This Scan

  • The diameter of your abdominal aorta
  • Whether any widening (aneurysm) is present
  • The size of any aneurysm detected

This scan cannot assess:

  • Aneurysms in other parts of the aorta (chest)
  • The exact cause of an aneurysm
  • Blood flow patterns (a separate Doppler study may be needed)

Why You Might Need This Scan

Common symptoms:

  • A pulsing sensation in the abdomen
  • Deep, constant pain in the abdomen or side
  • Back pain

Conditions we assess:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (small, medium, or large)
  • Aortic widening

What to Expect

Before Your Scan

You must fast for at least 6-7 hours before your scan. This reduces gas in the bowel and allows for clearer images of the aorta.

Preparation checklist:

  • Fast for 6-7 hours before your appointment
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for easy access to your abdomen
  • Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time

During the Scan

You'll lie comfortably on an examination table. The sonographer applies a small amount of warm gel to your abdominal area and gently moves a handheld probe (transducer) across your skin to capture images of the aorta. The procedure is completely painless and typically takes 15-20 minutes.

After Your Scan

You can eat and drink normally immediately after. There are no restrictions — you can return to your usual activities straight away.

Results & Next Steps

Your scan is reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who prepares a formal report. This report is sent to you and/or your GP within 2-3 working days. If no aneurysm is found, no further action is typically needed. If a small aneurysm is found, you will be advised on follow-up scans. If a large aneurysm is found, your report will be sent to your GP immediately for vascular specialist referral.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — this is a completely painless procedure. You'll feel only light pressure from the probe on your abdomen.
The scan itself takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Please allow 30 minutes total for your appointment.
No referral is required for this screening scan. However, if an aneurysm is detected, you will need to provide details of your GP or healthcare provider for follow-up care.
Fasting reduces gas in the bowel, which can obscure the view of the aorta. This helps ensure we get the clearest possible images.
A consultant radiologist will review your images and a formal report will be available within 2-3 working days.
If a small aneurysm is detected, you'll typically be monitored with regular follow-up scans. If a larger aneurysm is found, you'll be referred to a vascular specialist to discuss options. Early detection is key — most aneurysms can be successfully managed when caught early.
