Watch our video about the importance of taking folic acid during pregnancy.

Why Folic Acid is Essential

Folic acid (vitamin B9) is one of the most important supplements you can take before and during pregnancy.

Key Benefits

Prevents Neural Tube Defects

Folic acid significantly reduces the risk of conditions like spina bifida that affect your baby's brain and spine development.

Supports Healthy Development

It plays a crucial role in:

  • DNA production
  • Cell division
  • Early organ formation

When to Start

Ideally, begin taking folic acid:

  • Before conception - at least one month prior
  • Continue through the first 12 weeks of pregnancy
  • Many doctors recommend continuing throughout pregnancy

Recommended Dosage

The standard recommendation is 400 micrograms (mcg) daily for most women. Some women may need higher doses - speak to your healthcare provider.

Food Sources

While supplements are recommended, you can also boost intake through:

  • Dark leafy greens
  • Fortified cereals
  • Citrus fruits
  • Beans and lentils
