Love getting your nails done but worried about safety during pregnancy? Here's what you need to know.

The Honest Answer

The truth is: we don't know for certain whether nail polish is completely safe during pregnancy. While there's no definitive evidence of harm, some ingredients warrant caution.

Chemicals of Concern

Three main chemicals in nail polish have raised questions:

1. Formaldehyde

  • Used to harden polish
  • May irritate the respiratory system
  • Best avoided in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces

2. Toluene

  • Gives polish a smooth finish
  • Linked to birth defects at high exposure levels
  • Common in many nail products

3. TPHP (Triphenyl Phosphate)

  • Affects flexibility of the polish
  • May disrupt metabolic hormones
  • Increasingly under scrutiny

Safety Recommendations

If you choose to use nail polish during pregnancy:

  1. Limit application to special occasions - reduce overall exposure
  2. Choose "3-free" or "5-free" polishes - formulated without harmful chemicals
  3. Ensure proper ventilation - open windows or use fans
  4. Maintain distance from your face while drying - minimise inhalation
  5. Consider wearing a mask - especially in nail salons
  6. Have someone else apply the polish - if possible
  7. Choose lighter shades - they require fewer touch-ups and less exposure

Salon Safety

If visiting a nail salon:

  • Choose a well-ventilated establishment
  • Consider booking early morning appointments when fumes haven't built up
  • Bring your own polish if preferred
  • Sit near an open window or fan if available

The Bottom Line

It is unknown whether these chemicals will harm your unborn baby in typical exposure amounts. However, taking precautions is the sensible approach. Most women can still enjoy the occasional manicure - just be mindful of ventilation and product choices.
