Looking to find out if you are having a boy or girl? The timing of your gender scan is important for accurate results.

Optimal Timing

The best time for a gender scan is typically between 16-20 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage:

  • Baby's genitalia are developed enough to be visible
  • There's usually good positioning for clear views
  • Accuracy rates are highest

Why Timing Matters

Too Early

Before 16 weeks, the external genitalia may not be sufficiently developed to assess sex with confidence. While some scans at 14-15 weeks can identify gender, reliability is lower.

The Sweet Spot

At 16-20 weeks, we can typically achieve the clearest views and reliable assessment.

Later Scans

Gender can still be assessed in later pregnancy, though baby's position and size can sometimes make viewing more challenging.

What Affects Accuracy?

Several factors influence whether gender can be assessed:

  • Baby's position - some positions make viewing difficult
  • Placenta location - may obstruct the view
  • Amniotic fluid levels - affects image clarity
  • Baby's cooperation - they need to be in a good position!
