The 12-week scan is a significant milestone in your pregnancy journey. Here's what to expect during this exciting appointment.

What Will the Scan Show?

This ultrasound examination allows medical professionals to see and assess many important things:

How Many Babies?

The scan will reveal how many babies you are having - one, twins, or more! This can be an exciting surprise for some parents.

Fetal Measurements

The sonographer will measure various fetal structures including:

  • Crown-rump length (CRL) for accurate dating
  • Head circumference
  • Heart rate (typically around 160 beats per minute)

Nuchal Translucency Screening

A key component of the 12-week scan is measuring the nuchal translucency - the fluid and skin along the back of your baby's neck. This measurement helps screen for potential chromosomal conditions like Down's Syndrome.

Combined with blood test results, this provides valuable information about your baby's health.

What Happens During the Scan?

  1. Gel application - The sonographer applies warm gel to your abdomen
  2. Transducer scanning - They move the device across your belly to capture images
  3. Measurements taken - Various structures are measured and recorded
  4. Images captured - You'll receive photos to take home!

How Long Does It Take?

The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes, during which you'll be able to observe your baby on the screen.

What Will You See?

This is an exciting scan because you'll see your baby:

  • Moving and stretching
  • Their heartbeat (that magical flicker!)
  • Developing features
  • Their tiny hands and feet

Can You Find Out the Gender?

While male genitalia may be visible as a small nub at this stage, sex determination typically occurs at the 20-week scan. The 12-week scan is primarily for dating and screening purposes.

Preparation Tips

  • Drink plenty of water before your appointment (a full bladder helps with imaging)
  • Wear comfortable clothing for easy access to your abdomen
  • Bring your partner or support person if you'd like
