What is the Well Baby Scan?

Hi I am Siobhan, patient support specialist at Ultrasound Dimensions.

The Well Baby Scan is performed to determine the position, growth and the health of the fetus between 20-40 weeks.

What will be assessed during the Well Baby Scan?

This scan will commonly measure:

– the size of the fetal head

– abdomen

– thigh bone

– heart rate

– and calculation of an estimated fetal weight (EFW)

Each measurement is compared to a normal reference range, which varies with gestation. Every individual baby has its own characteristics, these characteristics are often similar to the baby’s parents ie- a larger or smaller head or longer or shorter legs.

We will also examine:

– fetal movements

– placental position

– amount of amniotic fluid

– and assess blood flow to the placenta

The position of your baby will also be determined to see whether they are:

– feet-first

– buttocks first

– transverse

-or at an angle

Not all women need to have an ultrasound in the latter part of their pregnancy and every baby has their own individual growth pattern, but having a well-baby scan can offer a lot of reassurance.

If you have any further questions about the Well Baby Scan or would like to make an appointment, please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone or email, we are always happy to help!
