A follicle tracking scan measures the size of any active follicles. Follicles are the fluid filled sacs of the ovaries that can contain an egg and knowing the size can help to predict when ovulation will occur. It is performed to estimate when ovulation is likely to occur and can increase your chances of fertilisation, both naturally and with the help of fertility treatment.

When is the follicle tracking scan performed?
You will usually need three follicle tracking scans performed in any one menstrual cycle. A detailed gynaecological scan is performed on your first appointment – this takes place from about day 3 to 5 of your menstrual cycle – day one is the first day of bleeding. Subsequent scans, at 1 – 2 day intervals as indicated and concentrates on the ovaries and endometrium and offered at a lower cost.
What happens during a follicle tracking scan?
Follicle tracking scans are performed internally for maximum accuracy. Any growing follicles are measured, as when the follicles reach a certain size we are able to estimate when you are likely to ovulate.
During the examination we also check to see if you have any fibroids or polyps present that may cause complications with embryo implantation.
What’s included in the report?
The gynaecological survey will include clinical diagnostic information on the:
- Right ovary
- Left ovary
Results from your ultrasound examination will be available immediately after your appointment. We will provide a copy for you and your gynaecologist or fertility specialist or email them the digital results directly.
During the first visit we perform a comprehensive pelvic scan for €140 and all of the follow up scans are €60.
